GERANIACEAE

This beautiful, caudex-forming Pelargonium is native to South Africa, where it thrives in the harshest conditions. The exact species is still unclear, as it hasn't yet produced its flowers, making identification a bit unclear for now. My apologies for that.

Nevertheless, the ornamental value of the caudex and leaves should be reason enough to enjoy this plant. These are hardy plants with a rugged appearance and quickly develop a strong bonsai appeal.

Full sun and watering when the plant has leaves and is actively growing. Sometimes this is in summer and sometimes in winter. I've seen good results with both strategies. Some water from spring to fall and let them dry out completely during the cold winter, where watering can cause root rot. Others keep them as winter growers and let them dry out from May until sometime in September. Limit watering during the dark and cold days to prevent rot.
