APOCYNACEAE
This remarkable plant originates from southern Africa (Angola, Zambia, South Africa, etc.) where it grows in grasslands with its beautiful pancake-shaped caudex underground. This beautiful, woody caudex truly comes into its own when presented in cultivation: above ground! This causes the caudex to thicken less quickly than it would underground, but it also avoids its extreme susceptibility to rot when watering. It produces several stems with insignificant leaves. It also sometimes produces a series of very small flowers, revealing its membership in the Apocynaceae family. The flat pancake shape is the showpiece of this plant.
Full sun (be careful with very bright summer sun, which could burn the caudex; provide adequate ventilation) and water during the growing season when the plant is actively growing. Water when the pot is almost completely dry. Stop watering the plant in mid-autumn when the days get shorter and colder. Root rot is a common problem with these pancakes. LESS IS MORE!
